In the midst of the Israel-Hamas conflict, a heated exchange between Florida State Representative Randy Fine and University of Florida President Ben Sasse has unfolded, revealing the growing pressure on university leaders to navigate reactions to the conflict. Fine called for the termination of a UF professor, accusing her of sharing antisemitic content comparing Israel to Nazi Germany. However, Sasse refuted the claims, asserting that the professor had retired years ago and hadn’t worked at UF recently.
The controversy stems from a social media post by Fine, who alleged that the professor was teaching that Israel’s actions against Hamas were akin to Germany eradicating Jews. The post included a screenshot from a user named Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons, who claimed that “Israel is a Nazi state.” Simmons, retired since 2019, had spoken at a pro-Palestinian rally and was cited as a former religion professor.
President Sasse, in a memo, criticized Fine’s post as “thirsty, attention-desperate,” emphasizing that the antisemitic content was shared on social media, not in a UF classroom. He highlighted the professor’s non-affiliation with UF for the past four years and defended the university’s commitment to fostering student engagement with challenging issues.
The broader context involves the Israel-Hamas conflict becoming a contentious issue on U.S. campuses, with accusations of universities inadequately addressing antisemitism or overlooking the struggles of Gazans. In Florida, state officials, led by Governor DeSantis, sought to disband local Students for Justice in Palestine groups for alleged Hamas support, but legal challenges, including a federal lawsuit by UF’s group, have hindered enforcement.
Other universities nationwide have taken action against similar groups, but Fine contends that UF should follow suit. Despite Sasse’s attempt to clarify the situation, Fine intensified his criticism, urging the university president to take more substantial action to protect Jewish students.
