Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s recent return to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center due to symptoms indicating a potential bladder issue has prompted Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks to assume his duties temporarily, as per the Pentagon’s announcement. Austin’s transfer of responsibilities came after his transport to the medical center by his security detail. Initially, Pentagon press secretary Pat Ryder stated that Austin retained his functions and duties while being evaluated for the emergent health concern. However, a subsequent update clarified that Austin had officially transferred these responsibilities to Deputy Secretary Hicks.

The notifications regarding Austin’s health issue were promptly sent to various government entities, including the Biden White House, members of Congress, and the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force Gen. C.Q. Brown Jr. This proactive communication contrasts with Austin’s previous hospitalization in December for complications arising from prostate cancer surgery. During that time, the lack of immediate notification to government officials, including the White House, raised concerns. Austin acknowledged mishandling the situation and expressed regret for the oversight during a subsequent press briefing.
While Austin’s previous discharge from the hospital was on January 15, the duration of his current hospitalization remains uncertain.
