The legal landscape is undergoing a transformative shift with the widespread adoption of generative AI tools, as revealed by a recent survey of UK legal professionals conducted by LexisNexis. Over a quarter of legal practitioners, totaling 26%, now regularly utilize these advanced AI systems, marking a significant increase since the previous year. Among the surveyed firms, a substantial 62% have already implemented operational changes to integrate generative AI into their workflows. These adaptations range from leveraging AI-powered tools for document drafting, conducting research, and streamlining communication, to investing in staff training and hiring AI experts. The primary driver behind this adoption surge is the recognition of generative AI’s capacity to enhance efficiency. A staggering 91% of respondents identified document drafting as the foremost application, followed closely by research (90%) and communication streamlining (73%). However, while the potential for contract analytics is acknowledged by 53% of respondents, there remains a gap in its perceived utility. Despite the enthusiasm for AI integration, several barriers hinder its widespread adoption. Concerns surrounding ‘hallucinations’—misinterpretations by AI systems—security risks, and a lack of trust in freely available technology emerged as the most significant obstacles. Nonetheless, Stuart Greenhill, director of segment strategy at LexisNexis, underscores the burgeoning appetite for generative AI within the legal sphere, emphasizing its time-saving capabilities as a driving force behind its increasing appeal.
