In the midst of a polarizing political landscape, key figures within the UK’s Conservative circles are rekindling their ties with Donald Trump as he eyes a return to the White House. While the official stance of the UK government remains neutral, influential Tories, including former prime ministers, are cautiously endorsing the controversial ex-U.S. president. The question arises: Could Trump 2.0 be a game-changer?

The resurgence of Donald Trump on the political stage has found an unexpected audience within the UK’s Conservative circles. While not everyone is donning MAGA hats, a noticeable number of Tories, including former prime ministers, are cautiously expressing support for the controversial ex-U.S. president as he gears up for the 2024 election.
In a recent column by Paul Goodman, editor of Tory grassroots bible ConservativeHome, the pros and cons of a second Trump term were laid out, questioning whether the upcoming contest is merely a choice between a “bullshitter and a corpse.” Despite labeling Trump with various criticisms, including being an “egomaniacal narcissist” and a “conspiracy theorist,” Goodman highlighted a center-right argument for a “pro-Britain” Trump that resonates with some Tories.
Drawing distinctions between Trump and Biden, who is perceived by many Tories as less supportive of the UK in post-Brexit disputes, the argument surfaces that Trump could project strength in a world where China, Russia, and Iran appear to be aligning. This echoes sentiments previously expressed by ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson, once dubbed “Britain Trump,” who sees a potential Trump presidency as a global win.
Liz Truss, who briefly succeeded Johnson as prime minister in 2022, also signaled support for a Republican victory in 2024. The admiration seems reciprocal, with some Tories openly expressing their preference for Trump over President Biden.
However, the embrace of Trump within Conservative ranks is not universal. Some, like former cabinet minister David Gauke, find it extraordinary for mainstream British politicians to support Trump, citing concerns about his disregard for the rule of law and democratic institutions. Others, like Alicia Kearns, chair of the foreign affairs committee, express disbelief at the idea of supporting someone facing legal challenges and allegations.
The debate within the Conservative Party reflects an internal struggle as it faces an identity crisis amid the threat of a significant defeat against the Labour Party in an upcoming election. Some view the support for Trump as a strategic move to counter Nigel Farage and his Reform Party, which has gained traction among disillusioned Tory voters.
While figures like Jeremy Hunt caution against potential U.S. protectionism under a Trump presidency, the pro-Trump faction within the Conservative Party seems poised to grow as Trump solidifies his position for the Republican nomination.
As the political landscape evolves, the UK Conservatives find themselves at a crossroads, grappling with the implications of aligning with a figure like Trump. Whether this alliance is a calculated strategy or a reflection of a deeper party divide, its impact on the upcoming election and UK politics as a whole remains uncertain.
