Breaking Barriers: One Solicitor Achieves Coveted KC Grade Amidst Diversity Challenges

In a groundbreaking revelation, this year’s King’s Counsel appointments showcase a remarkable achievement – only one solicitor has clinched the prestigious KC grade for the second consecutive year. Discover the intriguing dynamics behind the selection process and the challenges faced by aspiring legal professionals.

The King’s Counsel Selection Panel recently disclosed that out of 283 applicants, a mere 95 have ascended to the esteemed KC grade, boasting a 33.6% success rate. What’s particularly noteworthy is the apparent gender disparity, with twice as many men as women securing appointments. However, a closer examination reveals that women applicants outperformed their male counterparts, with a success rate of 36% versus 32%.

Moreover, the data exposes a diversity challenge, as only 14% of applicants declaring ethnicity other than white were successful. The intricate KC appointment process involves a recommendation from the lord chancellor to His Majesty The King, guided by the independent King’s Counsel Selection Panel. Each application incurs a fee of £2,370, with successful candidates paying an additional £3,990.

Monisha Shah, chair of the selection panel, commended the new silks, emphasizing the rigorous nature of the selection process. She asserted that every successful candidate is expected to be a credit to the legal profession. Shah also highlighted the ongoing commitment to monitoring diversity, particularly applications from lawyers of diverse backgrounds.

Law Society president Nick Emmerson expressed concerns about the relatively low number of solicitor applications for KC status since 1995. Out of approximately 217 solicitors who applied, only 65 secured the coveted status. Emmerson stressed the need for a robust application process based on merit but called for increased awareness among solicitors about the steps involved in applying for KC status.
