Florida GOP Chairman Suspended Amid Rape Allegation, Faces Calls for Resignation

The Republican Party of Florida has suspended Chairman Christian Ziegler following an emergency meeting, joining calls from top officials, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, for his resignation amidst a police investigation into a rape accusation. Ziegler is accused of assaulting a woman with whom he and his wife had a prior consensual relationship. Despite his defense during a closed-door meeting, the party board took swift action.

The Sarasota Police Department is investigating the allegation, which involves a planned threesome. Ziegler, who has not been charged, claims innocence. The situation has also led to turmoil for Bridget Ziegler, an elected Sarasota School Board member, and the couple faces criticism for their outspoken opposition to LGBTQ+ rights.

Prominent Republicans, including Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, have called for Ziegler’s resignation. The party’s executive committee will conduct another vote on Ziegler’s potential removal.
