Unraveling Legal Controversies: Former MP Triumphs Over High-Profile Defamation Battle

In a recent legal victory, former Conservative MP Charlotte Leslie emerges triumphant after overcoming a high-profile defamation action brought by party donor Mohamed Amersi. However, the saga doesn’t end there as Leslie gears up to file a complaint against libel specialist law firm, Carter-Ruck, for what she alleges as questionable conduct during the case.

Former Conservative MP Charlotte Leslie has recently secured a significant legal victory in a high-profile defamation battle against businessman Mohamed Amersi. The Court of Appeal, in a decisive judgment, refused permission for Amersi to appeal, concluding that he had ‘exhausted’ any potential defamation claim.

In a statement responding to the Court of Appeal’s decision, Leslie expressed her disbelief at the ‘fundamental flaws’ in the case against her. She questioned whether these flaws should not have been apparent to the experienced legal team at Carter-Ruck, the firm representing Amersi in the matter. Leslie went on to state that she was ‘shocked’ by the conduct of Carter-Ruck and announced her intention to file a complaint with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) regarding the firm’s actions.

Carter-Ruck, however, vehemently rejected any suggestion of misconduct. A spokesperson for the law firm maintained that it would not be appropriate to comment on client matters and emphasized their strong rejection of any claims of impropriety.

Leslie expressed her belief that Carter-Ruck knowingly pursued a series of what she deemed to be abusive legal cases against her since early 2021. Furthermore, she highlighted the firm’s persistence in pursuing the libel claim despite a warning issued by the SRA on November 28 of the previous year. The warning specifically addressed abusive litigation, including SLAPPs (strategic litigation against public participation).

In response to what she perceived as misconduct, Leslie announced her formal complaint to the SRA, asserting that Carter-Ruck’s actions have brought the legal profession into disrepute. She took the opportunity to commend her legal team for securing an unequivocal victory and thanked them for their professionalism and dedication.
