Justice Prevails: 5 Men Convicted in Soumya Vishwanathan Murder Case After15 Years

In a long-awaited verdict, a Delhi Court has finally brought justice to the murder case of journalist Soumya Vishwanathan, over 15 years after her tragic death in 2008. The Additional Sessions Judge Ravindra Kumar Pandey of Saket Court delivered a landmark judgment, affirming the prosecution’s unwavering evidence, dispelling any reasonable doubts. This development followed the court’s decision, which had been eagerly anticipated since October 13.

The five men involved in the case now face the consequences of their actions. Four of them were found guilty of the grave charges of murder (Section 302) and common intention (Section 34) under the Indian Penal Code, 1860. The fifth accused was convicted of dishonestly receiving stolen property (Section 411 of IPC). Additionally, all five were convicted under the relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.

The convicted individuals, Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljeet Malik, Ajay Kumar, and Ajay Sethi, have been in custody since March 2009. Their involvement in Soumya Vishwanathan’s murder, which occurred on a fateful night in 2008 as she was returning home from work, has been under scrutiny for years. The Delhi Police believed that the primary motive behind the heinous act was robbery. Notably, the breakthrough in the journalist’s murder case was achieved following the recovery of the weapon used in the killing of IT executive Jigisha Ghosh.

This verdict is particularly significant as it echoes the prior convictions in the murder of Jigisha Ghosh. In August 2016, the trial court had sentenced Kapoor and Shukla to death and handed Malik a life imprisonment term. However, in 2018, the Delhi High Court commuted the death sentences of Kapoor and Shukla to life imprisonment while upholding Malik’s life sentence. This decision underscores the complexities and intricacies of the Indian legal system.
